Groundwater Flow and Fate and Transport of VOCs at U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina

Friday, March 28

Location: USGS Water Science Center (1770 Corporate Dr, Suite 500, Norcross, GA 30093)

Meeting Topic

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) constructed groundwater-flow and contaminant-fate-and-transport models and other water models in support of ongoing health studies being conducted at U.S Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The groundwater-flow and contaminant-fate-and-transport models simulated the migration of VOCs from source locations to water-supply wells. A regional groundwater-flow model (MODFLOW) was constructed and calibrated that represents the hydrogeologic framework and simulates groundwater flow in the study area. Results of the groundwater-flow model provided monthly flow-boundary conditions for small-scale contaminant-fate-and-transport models (MT3DMS). Simulated monthly contaminant concentrations from the MT3DMS models at several water-supply wells in the study area were used to estimate monthly mean concentrations of the contaminants in finished water from water-treatment plants.
